Secure Web Ordering Tips

By Larry Miller

One of the first things to check, when ordering online, is the icon to the left of your address bar up at the top of your page. Left click it this will then tell you if it is encrypted.

If not you might not be on the order page yet, if you are it will ask for credit card and personal info. Here is where it should be encrypted test again left clicking the icon to the left of your address bar.

When it opens and says your connection to this website is encrypted to prevent eavesdropping, left click on the more information button. There is three sections to look at, 1- web site identity Click on view certificate at the top it should show SSL server certificate 1-a issued to name of company or person should be here 1-b issued by this is the SSL certificate issuer 1-c Validity this should show when it was issued on and when it expires make sure they are current. 1- d At the bottom there should be a fingerprints section with say SHA1 and MD5.

There are many other things to check if you have an old surf browser, make sure the website address showing in the certificate is spelled the same as the one showing up in your address bar.

Most new browsers that surf the web like firefox 3 and the new version of opera have built in protection for Phishing.
Phishing is the Attempt to trick you with a site that looks like another with some small miss spellings in the address.

There are many SSL certificate companies here is a partial list 1- Usertrust.com 2- verisign.com 3- Thawte.com 4- securetrust.com that will usually show up as a padlock when they are secured in your browser at the right bottom of your page and at the top to the left when you left click on the icon.

This would then bring up a box showing a padlock in the bottom and the words your connection to this website is encrypted to prevent eavesdropping. Never put in your personal secure info without making sure the site is secure.

The web can be very secure and safe to order just watch a few key areas, and stay updated with your windows and website browsers.

Keeping your antispyware and antivirus up to date and run a scan at least once a day, if you still have problems with spyware maybe its time to uninstall and try a new one read some reviews on c nets download.com to find a good one
