Install Windows on a old hard drive

Installing windows on a old hard drive, should always start with a backup of your drivers you will need and your files such as pictures text documents that have been saved and software. Now the next step would be to make sure the jumper setting on the back is set to master if this is the only drive,if not set this as slave and install windows on the master after this next step. Now download deriks boot and nuke http://www.dban.org/ which is free. Next download Image burn its also free http://www.imgburn.com/. Install both of these on yours or another computer,once installed look for the image it will be an ISO file for dban and whatever version it is now 1.07 last stable release, use image burn start it up and select burn put a blank cd in your drive then select burn and wait,it should only take a few minutes to burn. When its done put it in your drive of the computer that you want a fresh install of windows on. start it up and make sure your bios is set to boot from the cd drive first this is either f1 or delete key sometimes f7 or f8. when dban starts up it will automatically see your hard drive follow the screen instructions usually f10 then enter. This may take a little time about a few hours at least but it will be a complete raw hard drive when done,ready for a clean install of windows. Next put your full install disk of windows in your cd drive restart your computer windows will start to install automatically. You can do a fast format or normal, then selext all your settings and type in your product key number on your cd.

Make sure you defrag after the install and after each program you install. Then update windows and check your drivers by right clicking on my computer then left click hardware then left click device manager, then look to make sure there is no yellow exclamation points if so that piece of hardware needs a driver.
