How to buy a Quality PC Power Supply

By Larry Miller

The first thing is determine how many drives are going to be powered, and the type of CPU. A standard computer with 1 hard drive and a floppy drive with 1 dvd writer you should pick at least a 350 watt.

A good pc power supply will give you about 6 to eight molex connectors, these connect to your hard drives, dvd drives and
some high power video cards. A newer Motherboard will have serial ata connectors a good power supply will have at least two of these its better to get one that has four or more because the newest DVD burner drives are serial ata also, these perform at faster speeds then the old IDE drives.

Look at these Ratings the MTBF this is a rating in hours it stands for mean time between failures don"t buy one that has a rating below 30,000 hours.

The Power Efficiency should be at least 80% for a good one
most really good power supplies have more then one fan one to bring in hot air and another to take it out.

Most new Video cards require a pci express 16 video connector so make sure your power supply has at least one. The power connector on most new power supplies should be a 24 pin connector that if need be can connect to a 20 pin motherboard, by sliding the 4 pin section off of the end.

When using duel core processors and duel graphics cards your watts you will need will increase quite a bit. A 550 watt would be my minimum suggestion,if more then one hard drive and three or more cooling fans go with a 800 to 1000 watt.

Most Motherboard and processor combo units will give you a minimum power supply recommendation. Also Many brands are well known to produce very good quality power supplies, some are Pc Power and Cooling, Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Enermax and Aerocool there are more but these are some of the best.

PFC this means power factor correction if a power supply has active or passive pfc it can correct for small ac line variations to have a more pure power output. these units tend to cost a little more but are worth it,they are of better quality.

Power supplies come in many types the most common is the atx
and the micro atx. Some manufacturers use proprietary cases which use special power supplies these can be a strange shape and size, and are usually for a micro case or slim desktop case.
